Job profile: Civil engineer (consulting)

Working with the natural and built environments, civil engineers are heavily involved with design, development and construction in projects across transport, waste management and geotechnical engineering, to name but a few.

Consulting civil engineers work with companies and organisations to manage, design and supervise their projects and are sometimes responsible for on-site safety.

Potentially working across a wide array of responsibilities for their client, consulting civil engineers act as designers on projects with contracting engineers responsible for putting those plans into action.

As part of this, consulting civil engineers will become involved with undertaking feasibility plans and site investigations, assessing risk, supervising tenders, communicating with subcontractors, architects and clients. Consulting civil engineers are also likely to become involved with budget management, planning permission, scheduling and project management.

Successful entry into civil engineering comes via an Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) accredited civil or structural engineering degree. It’s possible to get in with other engineering degrees but you may find your promotional options limited. Entry for Diplomates is difficult, but they can top up their HND with a degree which would make it easier.
