Everything that is man-made involves processing and at some stage requires the involvement of a chemical engineering technician.They deal with all kinds of materials in addition to chemicals and petroleum to extract as many products as they can from raw materials in a cost effective and safe way. They usually work in teams, within a group of engineers, other technicians and operatives, sometimes under the supervision of a chemical engineer. Their work will involve responsibility for maintenance procedures and trouble-shooting, repair and replacement, quality control, health and safety considerations for the plant itself and the environment, and profitable operation.

What are the routes in?
A craftsperson or operative working in chemical or process engineering may be able to become a technician by studying part-time. You will need a BTEC National Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering, a City & Guilds (2800) Certificate in Engineering or a vocational A level in Engineering.Four GCSEs/S grades (A-C/1-3), including maths and English, are usually needed. In Scotland, evidence of a good standard of education and S grades in maths, science and technology subjects are preferred.Apprenticeships may be available for those up to the age of 24.
 
Opportunities exist with manufacturers in material development and design, marketing, selling and customer support.Chemical engineers technicians are always in demand and there are opportunities to reach senior managerial positions.Foundation degrees may be available for chemical and analytical technicians - they can be delivered flexibly through two to three years' part-time study or by distance learning. For those who want to progress towards engineer status. They then can then continue on to study a degree on chemical or pharmaceutical engineering, or a similar programme.
 
What is the work like?
Chemical engineering technicians normally work in a laboratory or on site.They generally work a 37 hour week including evenings and weekends. Their hours are not always standard and they may have to work shifts in some environments.
