In the past, draughtsmen produced technical drawings. Now, computer aided design systems are the norm for creating overall designs or detailed drawings. CAD operators are skilled users of information systems and do some of the more routine design work as part of a design team. They work in drawing offices and often support the design team.The starting point may be instructions from the project or team leader. Usually, the draughtsperson works from design drawings of the overall product or section, or possibly from a model or computer model of the proposed item.

What are the routes in?
An important entry route is with an employer as a technician apprentice through an Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship. Most apprentices enter the profession at 16 to 18, but entry is possible up to 25. Entry will require four GCSEs/S-grades (A-C/1-3) including maths and chemistry or technology, or an appropriate Intermediate GNVQ/GSVQ Level II. Apprenticeships may be available in England.
 
This is a rapidly growing area and there are opportunities in many other industries such as construction, aerospace, railways, electronics, broadcasting and telecommunications.This is a field where it is possible to work through the system from apprentice to technician, and ultimately to a position as an architect or chartered engineer.In some companies, it may be possible to win promotion from a junior to senior position and to team leader.
 
What is the work like?
A CAD draughtsperson will normally be based in a design office, drawing office, or in a design section of a larger open-plan office with other engineers and technicians. A typical working week will be 37 to 40 hours. Freelance work may be possible, either independently or through an agency.There may be opportunities to work abroad.
